In the case of good books, the point is not how many of them you can get through, but rather how many can get through to you.

And the hits keep coming...

Everyone has been in a hoopla over Michael Jordan's acceptance speech at the NBA Hall of Fame ceremonies this past weekend. Our own local columnist, Lutz, even compared MJ's speech with the embarassing and ludicrious antics of Sereena Williams and Kanye West. Seriously? Did MJ threaten anyone with wanting to shove a basketball up specific body areas or interrupt an NBA championship trophy awarding? Michael was being, well, Michael. Most of his "digs" I had heard already in previous speeches or conversations between Michael and the media. If anything, most of the speech was redundant. Possibly, his speech could have been more sentimental and quite possibly the speech stood out because it came at the end of what were mostly sentimental, low-key, and serious speeches. I believe had Charles Barkley given the same speech, everyone would be talking about how funny he was. But, enough about MJ's speech.

With regards to speeches, there was an even greater display of bad behavior to discuss. What I was truly appalled by this weekend was the treatment of Juan Martin del Potro by Dick Enberg at the U.S. Open. Enberg's outright denial of allowing del Potro to speak in Spanish to his family and friends of Argentina in the audience was embarrassing and, dare I say, rascist. The fact that the young man had to ask and be brushed off more than once is truly shameful. I'm glad that del Potro finally was able to speak to his family and friends in his native language, although Enberg still insisted he "keep it short."What was a triumphant and glorious moment for the young man was tainted by Enberg's actions.

What a week of bad behavior: Wilson, Williams, West, Enberg...

I guess grace and good manners have been tossed out the window along with everything else in our society. I'm afraid to ask what's next.
