Whirlwind of a Week
Monday, March 30, 2009 It's been one crazy week. Last Monday evening my beloved Shockers fell to the Stanford Cardinals, ending their run in the CBI. But, I am proud of them and the way they played the end of the season. Mark my words, the Shox will be NCAA tournament bound next year.
I gave a response presentation on the significance of Amy Denver in Toni Morrison's Beloved on Wednesday. What an amazing novel written by an even more amazing woman. I had owned a copy of Beloved for five years, but had never had the chance to read it, until my Magical Realism class. Worth the wait.
I also finished Gloria Naylor's Mama Day, which has the most interesting narrative. The story is told from the point of view of a woman, Ophelia, and a man, George, as well as a collective voice from Willow Springs, Ophelia's home town. The dialogue is wonderfully comical and realistic.
I wrote a nine page short story, "Immigrant Song," which I am adding to my collection of short stories. It is the shortest story I have ever written. Most of my stories end up begin not so short, usually 18-20+ pages. However, Amahlia, the young girl in this story, only needed nine pages to tell the story of her grandmother.
And, I read Mariano Azuela's (Los de Abajo) The Underdog: A Novel of the Mexican Revolution and wrote a 4-page book review for the History of Mexico class I am taking as my enrichment course.
And believe it or not, I didn't miss one game of the tournament this weekend, attended a friend's 50th Birthday bash on Saturday, and had an early dinner on Sunday at my parents home to welcome my sis visiting from Chicago. Whew!
Oh yes, and enjoyed a snow day on Friday! They closed the university and I got to go home at noon, make shrimp chowder, build a fire, and drink Mexican sweet hot chocolate with my hubby, while Rigby snored at our feet.
I love weeks like this and from the looks of my April calendar, it's a good thing.
