Victory
Saturday, January 17, 2009 The "black out" worked. The Shockers have beaten Creighton by 13. I don't even remember the actual final score, just the difference, 13.
Not only did the Shox obtain their first MVC win, they played as a team for the first time this season, a complete team. Not one or two guys carrying the burden, not one or two fighting on behalf of their lack luster teammates, but all playing together. A team effort. I think that's what Coach Marshall actually said in the post-game, "team effort." Exactly.
This was the team that gave their all in the Old Spice Classic. This was the team that held their own against Georgetown and Michigan State. They out rebounded Creighton 47-22. They played impressive defense, holding the Bluejays to just 33% from the field. And they were passionate. You could sense by their play that they wanted this game and I'm not sure if the crowd fed off that intensity or vice versa, but the end result was awesome. Even when the last few minutes of the first half were winding down and Creighton went on a run, the Shockers did not panic, they maintained their lead and kept the momentum. Something we haven't seen since valley play started. They took the lead and never looked back.
And, I'm proud of Shocker Nation. I guess when things are looking bleak, I tend to forget the true loyalty of Shocker fans. They came out in force and they rocked the house. Coach Alien..er, Altman even commented on the crowd and how it is always hard to play WSU at home because of the fans. Even with an 0-6 in the valley team, today was no different. It was loud, it was crazy, it was intense...it was Shocker basketball.
As for superstitions, I plan on wearing black the rest of the season.
