Wearing Black
Friday, January 16, 2009 Horrible. As Bill "Grateful Red" Walton would say, "Horrrrrible!" That's all I have to say about Wednesday night's loss to Missouri State. No effort + no passion = no win. The Shox are at the bottom of the MVC and meet Creighton at home on Saturday. Tomorrow. Horrible.
And what's with the "Blackout the Blue Jays?" My Dad and I were confused a few weeks ago when it was announced at the game that everyone is encouraged to wear black for the Creighton game. Black? With our record at the time at 0-3 in the valley, my Dad jokingly said, "We're officially in mourning." I think he may be right.
But, black? For a televised game? I thought the whole idea was to be seen. Bold gold throughout the arena. Possibly, the PR people knew something we didn't and that wearing black will make the empty seats less visible.
Or maybe it's just time for a change. I have my superstitions. There are many garments I no longer wear because just seeing them hanging in my closet reminds me of a significant game, a significant loss. And so, they hang each year in my closet. I've been known to wear the same shirt throughout a season, although I do wash it. I'm not that crazy.
Maybe wearing black will bring that much needed change to Shocker Nation. I do hope so. The scariest thing about Wednesday's game was that look of defeat in the eyes of those players as they left the court. Defeat.
We have many more games to play and I know that if they could just get that first valley win, things would change. Trust me, I have no delusions of a championship, but I do have hope for a better season. That the year will end on a good note, building that much needed momentum for next season.
I better go see what I have in Shocker Black that I can possibly wear for tomorrow.
