29th Annual Toy Run
Monday, November 3, 2008 Sunday was the 29th Annual Toy Run. We have been participating in the run since 2004 and each year it gets bigger and better. Yesterday saw a record-breaking 3310 bikes. The day begins early with breakfast. This year Snoops offered free biscuits and gravy to bikers. From Snoops we headed to Lawrence Dumont Stadium for the line-up at 10:30 am. Traditionally, after lining up and setting landmarks to find our bikes when we return, we walk over to the stadium for beers and Bloody Mary's and to chat with friends.
Around 12:30, everyone heads back to their bikes for the pull-out at 1:00. The sound of the bikes is amazing and always gives me goosebumps. With Santa and Mrs. Claus leading the way, we head out in double-file to the Kansas Coliseum. Maple street and Broadway are line with people cheering us on and waving. Usually, candy is tossed to the kids at curbside, but last year there was an incident of a child running into the path of the bikes, so we were asked not to throw candy. A few still did, but were very careful.
It is such a tremendous feeling to see all of these bikers, toys strapped to their bikes, bikes decked out in garland, bikers wearing Santa hats, heading to the coliseum to distribute their toys for the Toys for Tots campaign.
It was a spectacular day to ride with your friends and for a great cause. If you have never witnessed the Toy Run, I encourage you to mark the first Sunday in November next year, because it is a sight and an event you do not want to miss.
To all of you that participated this year, thank you and see you next year!
