Spokane Garry
Friday, October 17, 2008 It seems the disrespect for a native people and their fight for identity and remembrance continues.I know many might think the tearing down of a statue minute, bearing to mind Shelley's Ozymandias in some respects, as we should be captured by our legacy alone and not a physical monument. But, I guess it isn't just the razing of the statue that burdens my heart, but the vandalism itself endured by the sculpture of Spokane Garry. Those that chose to break off his fingers, his nose, chip away at pieces of the body, did not know who the man was or is to a people, to history. Nor did they care. Therein lies our greatest fault, the teachings of indifference. It's just a statue, right?
I hope the community of Spokane procure a means to remember Spokane Garry, not just in sculpture, but in keeping alive his legacy and continuing his story, both written and oral, a monument withstanding.
